Abstract :
Background: Several treatment methods have been described for treating knee OA including prolotherapy using hypertonic dextrose. Other than periarticular hypertonic dextrose injection, the hyaluronic acid intraarticular injection also considered to treat knee OA.
Aims: To evaluate studies examining efficacy of dextrose prolotherapy compared with intraarticular hyaluronic acid injection in the management of knee OA, assessed and evaluated by sonographic features of knee joint.
Methods: Systematic search on PubMed and Scopus databases were conducted to identify original manuscripts. The search period spanned from inception to March, 2022 utilising ultrasonography and pain assessment to evaluatethe effect of dextrose prolotherapy and/or hyaluronic acid injection within knee OA. Data were extracted from manuscripts meeting the inclusion criteria.
Results:There were three studies were identified thecomparative effect between dextrose prolotherapy and intraarticular injection of hyaluronic acid on knee osteoarthritis. Both of them showed improvement on pain and function, despite the dextrose prolotherapy seemed to be more significantly effective to treat knee OA, but none of them describe the sonographic changes after selected treatment due to lack of existing studies.
Conclusions: Further researches are required to present the effect of existing modalities to treat knee OA assessed and evaluated by the sonographic features of knee joint.
