Abstract :
BACKGROUND: In children, erythromelalgia is a rare chronic pain disorder characterized by severe burning pain, erythema, and itching involving the feet. Management of erythromelalgia is difficult and requires a complex multidisciplinary approach.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We present a case of effective treatment of primary erythromelalgia with long-term spinal cord stimulation in a 10-year-old boy. His genetic findings for mutations in the SCN9A gene were positive and he suffered from excruciating burning pain, itching, erythema and recurrent infections over 3 years. he had not responded to conventional management and received some relief only by immersion of his feet in ice water. Spinal cord stimulator electrodes were successfully implanted without complication, relieved her pain and improved function but not the sensation of burning pain. now 4 months postimplant.
CONCLUSIONS: This case demonstrates neuro-modulation as part of the multimodal regimen to treat pediatric erythromelalgia.
